6TH WORKSHOP: 'MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES APPLIED TO CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

The approach suggested for this session is inspired by Howard Gardner's (Harvard Business School) line of research on Multiple Intelligences and has been developed by Professors Sanciñena and Serrano over the last twenty years. The essence of this approach considers that in so-called multi-challenge situations (Conflict Management is clearly one of them) it is necessary to use more than one intelligence successively or even simultaneously. This is the only way to solve the different dimensions inherent in a conflict in their entirety. The opposite (a partial and incomplete solution) can lead us to win battles, and... lose the war! In Conflict Management (as a multi-challenge situation) it is essential to identify and analyse separately the different challenges before us and then see which intelligence is most appropriate for each of them. No less important is, after peering into the world of Multiple Intelligences, to be aware of which ones we are more likely to overuse, in order to avoid using them when the nature of the challenge is asking for a different approach. It makes no sense (and Conflict Management is no exception) to be tremendously efficient in providing a solution and utterly ineffective in the outcome. It is a mere question of intelligence(s).
